I guess the problem still exists in the released version of Mandrake 9.1
I'm using an ASUS L8400 notebook, which has the Savage/Mx well.
When installing from scratch, I'm getting the black screen mentioned above when
testing the X configuration. Besides this the XF86 log returns an error:
(EE) SAVAGE(0) Failed to Fetch an BIOS modes. Disable BIOS.
When upgrading from a 9.0 installation I've got is to work ... at least for a
limited time. So far it worked until I switched to the KDE login manager (this
would not be the root cause). Switching back to the Mandrake login manager gave
me at least some icons back (non X login (runlevel 3) and startx) home, CD and
floppy
on a total black background.
Haven't seen this with previous versions of Mandrake (switched from SuSE to
Mandrake 7.2).

Rgds,
Marc

I have a serious problem on my ASUS laptop, here is its configuration :
ASUS L8400
PIII 850Mhz on i440BX mother board chipset
192Mo SDRAM
S3 SavageMX 8Mo AGP 2X
20Go HDD

I'm running Mandrake Linux on it since 8.1 and without any problem with the 9.0.

here is the problem: when I select S3 SavageMX during the installation and try
to test it, the graphical window begins to appear, first a black empty window
with just the littre cross cursor, then the cursor change to an arrow and...
nothing else, the window stay black. I can move the cursor on the screen but
there isn't anything else dispayed.
