Has anybody had any luck getting USB to work on a A7N8X?

Yes. IIRC, I had problems using the lower 2 ports, but the upper 2 work without any
problems.

OK. I'll try those first.

I have not modified /etc/lilo.conf and /etc/modules.conf from what I got from a
clean installation of 9.1.

Bios settings (as I remember them to be!)

USB Controllers: V1.1+V2.0

this is the same

APIC: disabled

I'm not sure what I set here...

I've set it "disabled" now too.

/etc/lilo.conf:
append="devfs=mount acpi=off ide1=ata66 quiet"

append="acpi=off hdd=ide-scsi"

(burner on hdd)

I'll try the devfs and ide appends. looking forward to the extra ide speed :-)

Installed devfsd, machine boots again. No usb :-(

# lsusb -vv

cannot open /proc/bus/usb, No such file or directory (2)

No usb module seems to be loaded.

# modprobe usb-interface

# lsusb -vv
Invalid product/subclass spec at line 2650

# lsmod | grep usb
usb-ohci               22120   0  (unused)

Quite puzzeled.

lspci -vv does show the usb controllers:
