I think the reason this has heretofore gone unnoticed is because many of the English native speakers here are US Citizens. As such we hear English butchered in so many unique ways daily it isn't always obvious what is, or isn't an error. I speak here of my own shortcoming and I grant that I'm not unique in this respect.
