One of the things I would like to see on Mandrake is easier access to
other network file servers for newbie users. Since we now have lisa
working mostly out-the-box (the GNOME equivalent works fine without any
configuration in most cases IIRC), would it be feasible/desirable to
have a network icon on the desktop by default?

For KDE users, try the one attached (save in your ~/Desktop).

Ideally, I would prefer to have lisa/kio_lan browse something like this:

+LAN Browser
+-Entire Local network (contents of current root of LAN Browser)
 +-Server (by hostname/IP)
  +-SMB/NFS/FISH etc
+-Windows Network
 +-Workgroup
  +-Server
   +-Share
+-Netware Network
 +-Bindery/NDS trees
  +-Server
   +-Volume
- -+AppleTalk Network

The problems at present with kio_lan are due to the limitations of
trying to represent some networking protocols as hostname/IP-based,
which has some problems:
- -Windows users will miss their workgroups, likewise other protocols will
miss some organisation-type grouping.
- -Windows9x doesn't respond to a request unless you use it's real netbios
name, you can't use it's hostname (FQDN) or IP. If the host part of the
FQDN, then you may be ok if the netbios name matches (unlikely on a home
network unless we have some wizard that sets up DDNS with ICS).

Problems in implementing this at present is that kio_smb has no wins
support, and lisa doesn't seem to do anything with workgroups (although
it might when using smbclient instead of libsmbclient, but it still
doesn't work right).

Comments?

Regards,
Buchan
