I tried this on 2 different installs of Mandrake 9.1 BEFORE posting the first 
time (both on different hard drives of the same machine). Both have the same 
problem! i.e. it is not possible to compile a kernel for 9.1 at ALL! I would 
beg to differ with the view in one of the previous postings that not being 
able to compile the kernel is a minor issue - I would say it is fairly major 
in the principle of linux.

Any news of fix or suggestions for workaround welcome.

just compiling kernel 2.4.21-0.18mdk and I experienced this problem with latest
Cooker gcc-3.3-1mdk:
