Civileme,

A lovely report.

I got a surprise a few weeks ago after fitting a Soltek SL67JV
motherboard (after rejecting two other motherboards). This one is
good, except for a very fast time-of-day clock, which does not
matter, since my time is set from ntp on bootup, and ad hoc
subsequently.

The surprise was to see an error message from the m/b or its BIOS
telling me that I was using ATA33 ribbon cables and that ATA66 cables
are necessary. Yes, it is an ATA66-capable m/b, but since all my
drives are ATA33, I used only ATA33 cables. Pretty clever, I
thought, to be able to detect the difference between the two cables
(both are the same 40 pin connector, but the 33 cable is 40 conductor
and the 66 80 conductor, for additional shielding).

Unfortunately new motherboards only provide a single ATA66 cable, not
the two that you need to be able to use the secondary IDE interface.
