I agree in having uptated rpm packages for stable release which would
provide missing macros.
I don't think that not having all packages backwards compatible is a no:
sometimes some packages cannot be backported due to many missing
requirements or conflicts, sometimes packager do not have the resources
to test on every possible version, packagers should not discard patches
for backward compatibility (unless those patches suck).
