Maybe that's the way they want it, so as not to look like a toy OS (as RH does
to my mind with their large cartoonish default icons), but to look more familiar
to 95% of the computer users out there?

The taskbar in KDE is defaulting to the "small" size.  This makes it hard to
read on anything less than a 17 inch monitor (particularly on a laptop).  Also,
most new users would probably prefer the "normal" size and it is easier for an
experienced user to switch from normal to small than a new user to make the switch.

While this is not a major "bug," in terms of polish and a professional look it
should be changed.
