I don't know if you already do, but try to run memtes to be sure that
memory timings are ok, and run smartctl to be sure that disk are also
ok.

run md5sum before and after the failure.  Yes, I know that it will be
cached in memory, attached program should help to empty the memory of your
machine.  Change the megs value until a value that will fit your
machine (assumed less than 2GB of RAM).
