------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-20-08 22:54 ------- I had 2 LILO problems with 9.1 final. First, my installation was an upgrade on an ext2 filesystem, and LILO wanted ext3 as I recall. My installation had started with 8.0, because I wanted two pieces of software in that release, Klyx and Eiffel. Then I re-installed 8.2 with the ext3 filesystem and upgraded to 9.1. The 9.1 installation installed LILO incorrectly, so it displayed LI and then hung on booting. I used a Win98 floppy to boot and restored the MBR, then booted with a Linux floppy and found that the upgrade had a KDE menu problem. Then I installed 9.1 (not an upgrade) and found that my one-user automatic login would let me log out, but wouldn't then allow me to login as root. I didn't find a way to turn off the automatic login with Userdrake, linuxconfig, etc. My system has 2 disks and a number of partitions, Win98SE, Win95 and space for Linux (tried 7.2, 8.0, 8.2 and 9.0). The problems with LILO seem to be confined to version 9.1. I hope these comments will be helpful in eliminating problems with 9.2. -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. ------- Reminder: ------- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: UNCONFIRMED creation_date: description: Lilo assumes that my second hard drive contains windows and needs to be remapped to be the first drive (map /dev/0x81 etc). Lilo also assumes that my dos partition must require the table directive. This problem has been around since version 6. Lilo installation should ask more intelligent questions so that the bootable drives are installed correctly. I spent the past 3 releases (6.0 to 9.0) thinking I needed to use a floppy lilo because lilo on the MBR was broken and therefore, the MBR needed to boot into normal windows. Problem was the drive remapping and the table directive without asking me anything about how my hard drives were set up, or where Windows booted from. On top of this, these directives were added without informing me that they were now available. I'm sure that me, being a veteran and taking 3 versions to discover this issue, it must be making life very difficult for novices, because nowhere in the documentation does it indicate what the real behavior of these directives are until AFTER installation is complete. Please add a couple of wizard type dialogs to the lilo install so that these problems can be avoided. Specifically - ask me where windows is located - first or second hard drive, and whether they should be remapped. And lastly, whether I have dos installed and where it is located (first or second hard drive). When these locations are on the first hard drive, the additional parameters (map and table) are not required.
