------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-29-08 07:33 -------
I am afraid the bug is very much still there in LM9.2rc1.

Problem 1:
----------
As usual, the installation is from ISO on hard drive. During package
selection, the expanded tree option is used. When the package gdb is
unselected, the GUI installer simply freezes. The freeze is 100% reproducible
and was reproduced THREE times by unselecting the same gdb package.

At this point, switching console (ctrl-alt-f1) shows this error (may or may
not be related to the X freeze) message repeatedly:

(runinstall2:io) Gtk-Critical **: file ../../gtk/gtkbox.c: line 408
(gtk_box_pack_end): assertion `child->parent == NULL' failed

Switch to ctrl-alt-f2 and then run "ps" which shows the process:

 /usr/bin/perl /usr/bin/runinstall2 --method disk

taking significant resident memory and CPU. At this point I could not run
"top" since the command was not available.

Problem 2:
---------

Problem 1 was avoided by not unselecting the gdb package. This allowed the
installation to continue till the point where video, sound, network, services
etc. are configured (the summary section). After configuring all, press on the
"next" button. The system freezes again.

In case its relevant, no printer or USB devices are connected to the system.
In fact, no printer configuration is attempted either.

As before, ctrl-alt-f1 shows the last message:

        Entering step "Install updates"

indicating the freeze has taken place before just at the above step.

Also, switch console (ctrl-alt-f2) and run "top" (it can be run now) which
shows the "runinstall2" process taking 99% CPU.

For both problems 1 and 2, the only way out is ctrl-alt-delete and start the
install process from the start.

I just hope that this LM9.2rc1 is not put out as the final version. It would
be a disaster.

description:
I am trying to install mandrake-9.1 as follows:
        - installation from iso (located on hard-drive)
        - graphical mode used
        - install partition is ext2 (formatted and checked for bad blocks)

The installer always freezes at the point where I begin selection/deselection
of the individual packages. When I expand the tree list and unselect a
package, the mouse cursor starts flickering and then X freezes so that reboot
is the only way out.

On the same machine, mandrake-9.0 can be installed smoothly using the exact
same method.

This bug is almost same as bug 2765 and may be related to bug 2014.
