Current ALSA status with various kernels:

I haven't been able to test the 2.6.0 kernel, as my IDE controller seems to crash it.

I tried just building the alsa library fround source, and it didn't help, so it's definitely one of the kernel modules. Unfortunately, I can't seem to build alsa with the new kernel source. It incorrectly does not detect USB or PCMCIA capabilities, and it gives this build error:
