The gnome-themes package doesn't contain sound files. Can you check that you were
complaining about the sound files from the gnome-audio package?

Now that we have ALSA by default on most hardware, it is more realistic to
activate Gnome2 desktop sounds for events.
Unfortunately, the default sounds are horrible, I'm sure they haven't change
since Gnome's first release.
Could we get these sounds updated please. Maybe we can use the event-sounds in
KDE to keep it all consistent. Ideally the event-sounds should be part of each
theme.
