Well, Gnome sounds should be on a per-theme basis. If the Gnome developers have
not yet made this separation, we will have to wait until they do, but the
default Gnome sounds are still naff.

The sounds come from /usr/share/sounds/. These are from the gnome-audio package.
The most frequently played sounds are in the gtk-events subdirectory:

activate.wav
clicked.wav
toggled.wav

It's the activate.wav that is particularly offensive.

Now that we have ALSA by default on most hardware, it is more realistic to
activate Gnome2 desktop sounds for events.

Unfortunately, the default sounds are horrible, I'm sure they haven't change
since Gnome's first release.

Could we get these sounds updated please. Maybe we can use the event-sounds in
KDE to keep it all consistent. Ideally the event-sounds should be part of each
theme.
