I've tried the Boot CD at that location without success. The symptoms are
unchanged.
The hardware has changed slightly, so I should update:
Gigabyte GA-7VA (rev. 2.0, BIOS F9)
AMD Athlon XP 2700+
3 x 512MB DDR/333 ECC SDRAM DIMMs
ChainTech GFFX 5900, 8xAGP, 128MB
Adaptec AHA-2940UW
Pioneer DVD-305S
Jaz 2GB external
UMax Astra 1220S scanner
Pioneer DVR-104
Seagate 8004, 80GB 7200rpm UATA/133 HD
SB Audigy Platinum
Nothing has substantially changed, the chipset is still Via, the video is still
nVidia, et c.
On the off chance that the problem was having >=1GB of memory, I also attempted
text installs ("text" and "text mem=512M") with only 512MB installed, using both
the CD (disk 0? :-) ) at the site mentioned above and again with the original
CD. No change.
So, ..., I'm still not sure what the problem is or how to fix it.

description:
Attempting to install Mandrake Linux 9.1 fails on most obvious paths:
1) Boot from CD1. <Enter>. Black screen and hang.
2) Boot from CD2. <Enter>. Black screen and hang.
3) Boot from CD1:
text: loads kernel image. "Ready." and hang.
vgahi: loads kernel image. "Ready." and hang.
vgalo: loads kernel image. "Ready." and hang.
linux: loads kernel image. "Ready." and hang.
alt1: loads kernel image. "Ready." and hang.
4) All of items under #3, with option "mem=800M".
5) All of items under #3, with option "mem=200M".
6) Boot from floppy, repeat #3, #4, and #5.
I wasn't able to try booting from floppy intending to install from HD since the
instructions for doing so appear to have been well hidden.
Hardware:
Gigabyte GA-7VRXP (rev. 1.0, BIOS F11)
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
2 x 512MB DDR/266 ECC SDRAM DIMMs
MSI GF4 Ti 4800, 8xAGP, 128MB
Adaptec AHA-2940UW
Pioneer DVD-305S
Pioneer DVR-104
[other SCSI devices]
SB Audigy Platinum
CDs's MD5 ckecksums are correct.
