It may feel so...
but since the newer chipsets are not fully supported in older kernels,
there will most likely be problems one way or another...

try booting with my boot-cd, press F1 at the beginning and type

linux noapic acpi=off

and see if it works...

Here is an other suggestion... go grab this image (from current cooker)
ftp://ftp.uninett.no/linux/Mandrake/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/images/cdrom.img
( or this one if you want to actually try to install a MDK 9.2 RC2+:
ftp://ftp.uninett.no/linux/Mandrake/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/images/cdrom.img)

and make a bootdisk to boot from ...

Of course you can't install your 9.1 with it, but I wan't to know if the 9.2
kernels work with your h/w...

so if you can boot with it, and it will complain about secondary stage
installer or modules... we'll know that 9.2 is capable of booting on you h/w

description:
Attempting to install Mandrake Linux 9.1 fails on most obvious paths:
1) Boot from CD1. <Enter>. Black screen and hang.
2) Boot from CD2. <Enter>. Black screen and hang.
3) Boot from CD1:
text: loads kernel image. "Ready." and hang.
vgahi: loads kernel image. "Ready." and hang.
vgalo: loads kernel image. "Ready." and hang.
linux: loads kernel image. "Ready." and hang.
alt1: loads kernel image. "Ready." and hang.
4) All of items under #3, with option "mem=800M".
5) All of items under #3, with option "mem=200M".
6) Boot from floppy, repeat #3, #4, and #5.

I wasn't able to try booting from floppy intending to install from HD since the
instructions for doing so appear to have been well hidden.

Hardware:
    Gigabyte GA-7VRXP (rev. 1.0, BIOS F11)
    AMD Athlon XP 1800+
    2 x 512MB DDR/266 ECC SDRAM DIMMs
    MSI GF4 Ti 4800, 8xAGP, 128MB
    Adaptec AHA-2940UW
        Pioneer DVD-305S
        Pioneer DVR-104
        [other SCSI devices]
    SB Audigy Platinum

CDs's MD5 ckecksums are correct.
