No it's probably hardware problems with your machine.

Try booting with "noapic" or even "ide=nodma".

When I installed my Dell Laptitude LS notebook with the external CDROM, it has
the following message. 

"I can't access a Mandrake Linux Installation disc in your CDROM drive (TOSHIBA
CD-ROM XM-1902B) Retry?" 

It happened in both Mandrake 9.2 RC1 and RC2. It can detected my CDROM and do
some hardware checking at the early stage of installation, but just stop
somewhere. This didn't happen before in Mandrake 9 and 9.1. Is that external
CDROM are not well support in this new version?
