You can grab libvcl645.so from 1.1-0.rc3.1mdk until .rc4.1mdk is released.
Could the lack of the Vera fonts rpm cause this? Or is is some other issue -
like a compilation or linking error, or a bad patch?
No, and anyway I removed use of vera fonts in text documents (Vera Serif) since they don't have any oblique face. However, Vera Sans is still used for the UI. You need the fonts, they should be on your mirror.
