Some follow-up and additional info:

Rebuilding alsa-utils-0.9.6-2mdk.src.rpm against kernel-source-2.4.22.7mdk does
not fix the problem.

Even though I need APIC to get suspend/resume to work, this alsamixer problem is
not fixed by booting without APIC support (e.g., with linux noapic). With
previous kernel-2.4.21.6mdk, if apic support was activated in order to try the
suspend/resume feature, the computer locked at the startup sound of KDE,and kept
on repeatedly playing first 1 or 2 seconds of that sound. Still with the
2.4.21.6mdk kernel + APIC + ALSA, the computer was unresponsive to mouse and
regular keyboard input. My keyboard is Brazilian/ABNT2 which doesn't seem to
have a SysRq key, at least it is not clearly marked as so... As I said before,
kernel-2.4.22.7mdk + APIC + ALSA doesn't lock the computer, but there's no sound
(even after disabling APIC or recompiling alsa-utils *.src.rpm).

description:
After updating to kernel 2.4.22.7mdk in order to test suspend to disk/resume
(which worked fine for the first time at my machine with this kernel version),
sound no longer works (neither PCM nor Audio CDs), and trying to start alsamixer
results in the following error message:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
