Further notes. What is actually happening is that if one clicks the logout button
before executing another command, such as opening a terminal window, the button
image stays depressed, and then after a considerable delay, the logout takes
place. If one executes another command during this delay, it appears to trigger
the logout immediately. It appears to work normally as long as one has launched
something beforehand, which outside of installing and testing such as I'm doing
would normally be the case.

With the -rc2 gnome, the 'logout' button does nothing. It was working in -rc1.
I've also switched the system in question to gdm so I can use the timed-login stuff
which I originated some years back, but that shouldn't be a factor.
I run debian/unstable on my main system, and seem to recall seeing this
behavior for a short while at some point.
