Try updating to gnome-session-2.4.0-3mdk and remove ~/.gnome2/session-manual .

With the -rc2 gnome, the 'logout' button does nothing. It was working in -rc1.
I've also switched the system in question to gdm so I can use the timed-login stuff
which I originated some years back, but that shouldn't be a factor.
I run debian/unstable on my main system, and seem to recall seeing this
behavior for a short while at some point.
