What's your file manager? With nautilus, the default application for torrent files
is btdownloadgui.py --url, which doesn't work for files, so you'll have to
select BitTorrent GUI from the context menu. It's possible that this is the
setting that is required to make it possible to start bittorrent from the web
browser without saving the torrent file first.

description:
If you double click on a *.torrent file in a file manager it is not opened with
BitTorrent GUI. No application assocciation is set. And if you set the
assocciation to BT GUI and then restart the computer the manualy set association
is lost and you have to set it all over again.
