I've finally tried it with my KDE at home and clicking a torrent file brought up
bittorrent just fine. Maybe your KDE settings are fucked up. Could you try to
reproduce this with a new user account?

If you double click on a *.torrent file in a file manager it is not opened with
BitTorrent GUI. No application assocciation is set. And if you set the
assocciation to BT GUI and then restart the computer the manualy set association
is lost and you have to set it all over again.
