Er... rpm *is* IMHO more flexible than deb*.
AFAIK the deb packages are only simple ar-archives with simple shell-
scripts for de-/installation. Maybe this has changed meanwhile, don't know.
RPM offers a set of powerful macros which are easy to use but also give
complete control and offer more information about a package and its
dependencies. RPM offers you also simple control of compiler options
at build time (e.g. i386, i486 etc.)

When I decided to use a package system for managing my private programs
and tools I looked at .deb and .rpm and decided to use the more powerful
rpm package system.

And please remember:
A package is always as good as its creator! ;-)
