I have the same firewire problem on my sony pcg-grx316mk, kernel 2.4.20. 
(i tried knoppix, because there is win2k all over the harddisk, but the problem
is the same...)

lspci tells me that the irq is set to 0. I tried setting it with "setpci -s
02:05.2 interrupt_line=9". (on windows, it works on int 9). but running lspci
after that tells me again that it is set to 0.

The Sony Notebook has a DVD/CDRW on the docking station which is accessed
