Can you try to use the oss driver of totem instead? Maybe you need to
edit the configuration file, ~/.gnome2/totem*

MDK9.2RC2. Totem updated to Cooker version. On starting, closing or playing a
new media file with Totem I often get
'Application "totem" (process xxxx) has crashed due to fatal error. (Aborted)'
When I press the Close button it starts up anyway and works. Often I can not
close the application. It just goes to a black screen and becomes
non-responsive. I have to use XKill to stop it.
