must be a configuration problem rather than a compilation problem.

you should monitor the logs (tail -f /var/log/mail.log) while on another
console/shell you try basics emailing (telnetting or using the standard
"mail" program from the mailx package)

worked for me out of the box on my work machine here and on my home
machine with a dialup connection.
