It's probably done to minimize hassle for those with an SMP, as it will
still work with a uniprocessor system, enabling this option merely
enlarges the kernel a bit for those who don't need it. I know that
sometimes apps complain about this, like older versions of VMware had some
module compilation issues. Some other versions of commercial OSS used to
be a picky on this option too. But it really is the most generic way to
compile a kernel, as those who need it won't have to recompile thier
kernel.
