And in addition to that, it makes sorting a lot easier.  Even if you just do
a plain ASCII sort, you'll end up with the items sort in increasing or
decreasing order with no hassle, whereas in the old ways (dd/mm/yyyy or
mm/dd/yyyy (yuck)) you have to implement a bit more logic.
