Perhaps you weren't using the Reiser File System?

Upgrading was doable but difficult for me.

But the Updates page on the Mandrake Web sight had the necessary 
instructions for the 10 or so extra steps necessary to bring
reiser up to speed with the update.

What was the reason that all those extra steps were necessary to 
support the ReiserFS?
