You'll get some speedup if rebuild cpu-critical packages for i686
architecture.

gcc-2.96 (which is unstable AWAIK) has "-march=athlon" option while currently
used gcc-2.95.2 cannot optimize for athlon, only for k6. I have no information
how fast i686-optimized code works on athlon.
