The lack of communication among MandrakeSoft operations yet again
amazes me!

For those inside and out that had not yet realised it, the ftp
services of MandrakeSoft are undergoing a very MAJOR reorganisation
which seems intended to solve many problems. I heartily approve of
it. The old cooker tree disappeared entirely yesterday and the new
one will support all the source RPMs, and include alpha and sparc
subtrees.

The present situation seems to be:

mandrake-devel/
  cooker/
    cooker/
      doc/
        install/
  7.2beta/
    i586/
      Mandrake/
        RPMS/
          {all these are symbolic links to the above cooker RPMs,
which are not there yet}
        <the usual subdirectories and files>

The symbolic links are of course to save server space and download
time, but seems organised backwards since the 7.2beta RPMs are
'frozen' while the cooker RPMs will continue to advance, unless the
decision has been taken to maintain the frozen version of an RPM
together with the more advanced version of the same RPM under
cooker. This will lead to great confusion, I would think.

The cross-symlinking arrangement requires all downloaders to
reorganise their directory structure to download from the
Mandrake-devel rsync lib and nothing else (otherwise the symbolic
links, which are relative, will not work) for both 7.2beta and
cooker.

I use the following rsync script to download only the i586 binaries:

#!/bin/bash
echo
echo /local/downloads must be mounted !!
echo
rsync -avP$1 --delete --delete-excluded --stats \
--exclude=SRPMS/ \
--exclude=alpha/ \
--exclude=sparc/ \
mirror.aarnet.edu.au::mandrake-devel/ \
/local/downloads/mandrake-devel/

In my setup the conventional /mnt directory has been replaced by
/local, and /local/downloads is a mounted 5.47GB ext2 partition.

Oddly, the new structure seems to have no place for the 7.2beta iso
images for those that want them.

I am looking forward to a formal authoritative announcement of the
new structure from MandrakeSoft which will explain how it should be
used by people who want only cooker, only 7.2beta tree, only 7.2beat
ISOs, and all of the above.
