Strange, as it does work even without accel.
Well, at first launch it is supposed to test the speed of your comp. Maybe
you launched it but it was not accelerated or something, try to remove the
config file [rm -f ~/.bzflag] and re-launch.

Sounds good, but it's generally speaking not very meaningful [for example
the results of Gears is very poor with Voodoo3/5 although the rest is
pretty nice]
