[Cooker] DVD?

My year old 52x CD-ROM broke today :(   Well I thought about picking up
another, but then I thought I might as well get a DVD-ROM since I may need
it later.  Anyone had good luck with a particular brand/model?   Also, I
only need the drive to read data DVDs right?  I only need a hardware (or
software) decorder card to watch movies (which when I last checked you
couldn't do legally under linux) right?
