printerdrake on the three betas is completely broken. Update it to the
newest version from the Cooker (package drakxtools-1.1.5-22mdk).

Update also:

   cups-1.1.3-10mdk
   cups-drivers-0.3.6-22mdk
   ghostscript-*-5.50-29mdk
   xpp-0.6-14mdk
   qtcups-1.0-12mdk
   kups-0.8-19mdk

Then you have all drivers (in the ghostscript package) and printer
descriptions (PPD files, in the cups-drivers package) to support all
printers which were supported by LPD in Mandrake 7.1 plus some
additional printers (mainly Lexmark winprinters). In addition, the
ghostscript package contains tools for maintaining Lexmark printers
(cartridge change, head alignment test page) and for colour adjustment
for HP DeskJet PPA printers. See subdirectories of
/usr/share/doc/ghostscript-5.50 (HPDeskJetPPA, Lexmark*).

For PPD files for native PostScript printers go to

http://www.adobe.com/products/printerdrivers/winppd.html

and uncompress the downloaded .EXE files with the "unzip" command. Copy
the desired PPD files to /usr/share/cups/model or to one of its
subdirectories. Restart the CUPS daemon with

   /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups restart

and your printer is in the list of printerdrake. This way there will be
all options available which are available under Windows or MacOS.

But in general it is much nicer to do the printer maintenance with
"kups". It does not need a daemon restart when one adds a new PPD file,
it scans the network for ethernet or SMB printers, it does autodetection
of all printers connected directly to your machine, you can kill and
move jobs, you can adjust the default options for your printers
(including colour adjustment for most colour inkjets, head alignment for
Lexmark), and much more.

For easy printing set "xpp" or "qtcups" as printing commands in your
applications and use "xpp <file>" or "qtcups <file>" for printing from
the command line.
