Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the correct mailing list for my problem(s); so I
beg your pardon and advice if this mailing is inappropriate.

I have a Mandrake 7.1 up and running, and installed the
XFree86-*-4.0.1-17mdk rpm's on top of it, both servers and libraries. I
encountered two problems:

1) With both the above mentioned 4.0.1 server as well as the 4.0 server
available as part of the plain Mandrake 7.1 distribution the Elsa
Gloria Synergy graphics card is unable to get a 1280x1024 resolution
at a reasonable refresh rate at 24bpp depth. The reason reported by
by the Xserver is that the maximum allowed pixel clock for the TI
Permedia 2 chip is 110 MHz. This is ridiculous as I'm happily running
the same graphics card with a 135 MHz pixel clock with the 3DLabs
   server of version 3.3.6.

Does anyone know if the pixel clock can be configured within the
XF86Config-4 file, or if the servers behaviour to assume a maximum
pixel clock of 110 MHz can be overwritten? I have found similar
problem reports on the XFree mailing lists for other graphics cards
as well, but there never seems to have been an answer.

2) After installing the libraries of 4.0.1, some applications behave
differently than under 3.3.6 - for example, xdvi (from plain Mandrake
7.1) does not show the buttons on the right side any more when the
4.0.1 shared libraries are installed. The problem disappears when
   installing the older 3.3.6 libraries.

A small X-application named bibview (available from ftp.dante.de or
any TeX archive; I also can provide a src-rpm if that is of some
help) compiles fine with both 3.3.6 and 4.0.1; but it gives runtime
   errors saying

     XtMakeGeometryRequest - parent not composite

when running with the 4.0.1 libraries. Simply intalling the 3.3.6
libraries again makes everything running without problems.

Is this a known, intended change in the behaviour of the X-libraries,
   or is it a bug?

Thank you very much,

  Chris Marquardt.
