I just use different ~/.xinitrc for my different wm's. Here is my gnome:
[root@cs5884-a /root]# cat .xinitrc.gnome
#!/bin/sh
.. $HOME/.bashrc              
xsetroot -solid '#056'
imwheel&
konsole &
exec /usr/bin/startgnome
