who say that ?
both kernel-2.2.17-21mdk and hackkernel-2.4.0-0.29mdk have decent V4L support
(respectively bttv-0.7.35 and bttv-0.7.44).
the kernel package support ~ 40 cards, the hackkernel supports a few more.
