I (Mandrake 7.1) have given up also for the time being, but only
because I cannot change the channels - picture and sound are OK, but
I had to add a vidmem= parameter to /etc/conf.modules.
You might do better subscribing to the V4l mailing list:

It seems well known that the bttv in the 2.2 kernels is broken. We
all await 2.4 and v4l2. Have you tried Gerd Knorr's latest bttv?
