Actually, I must say that not EVERYONE uses NetConf.  I tried it once
recently at work to help with a dial-up connection (and then switched to
wvdial about an hour later for its multiple settings capabilities and
simplicity).
At home, I haven't even touched NetConf since Mandrake 5.3.
