Less a goal than a Platonic ideal. No installation program (including
Windows) manages this in every case.

Sounds lke excessive modesty rather than hubris!

Me neither (at least with 7.0 and 7.1 - I haven't tried a full install of
7.2 yet). With a Trio S3 Virge GX neither full graphic nor vgalo will work,
but there is no problem when it boots into X, just a little tweaking of
XF86Config required (if we didn't have the aim of making Linux accessible
to beginners, I'd recommend that all distros produce a substandard X
configuration, just to get people used to hacking, heh heh).
