I had a similar problem. In kde my XMMS program and other music programs
would not work. Xmms would load the song and then fast forward through
and I would hear no sound and  I noted that the volume control was
always at 0. I deleted the .xmms directory and now sound plays in xmms
correctly. I don't have sound event selected or use them so I haven't
checked this out.
