Try a couple things.

a) Is it really powering down?  Try Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to see if it's just X
locking up, I've had this problem on one of my laptops.

b) Try disabling apmd and see if it goes away via:
chkconfig apmd off
/etc/init.d/apmd stop
