Hi - pleace try to think about this one.

I use a newly selfassembled machine: PIII 933 MHz, 256 MB ECC from
Compaque, ASUS P3V4X with an IBM 30GB and to this I try to use a Planet
Ethernet card with rtl8139 and have large difficulties.

The Ethernet card is not correctly installed in Mdk 7.2beta puts two
cards, from memory, eth0=8139too and eth1=rtl8139.
Debian potato refuses to go beyond installation of driver modules.
Slackware 7.1 refuses to recognice the PCI device.
Mandrake 7.0 does not reach the LAN and when pinging network
unreachable.

My son installed a Win98, which I have not used for three years, and
everything functions fine.

I had to rip out the soundcard and put in an ISA card NE2000, and can
now get out.

The interesting thing is that I can hardly download any single pages on
the Internet, the speed goes down very fast and stalles.

Is it possible that the BIOS has to be trimmed or what?

regards
guran
