I've had similar problems with artsd, I've found it best to leave at the
default settings.
No realtime, no full duplex.
You should switch X servers and see if that quenches your machine's thirst
for crashing. I have NERVER had a problem in over 4 years of linux with
anything like that that wasn't directly related to AMD processors or RAM.
Here come the AMD zealot flames. :)
I've had numerous problems with multiple AMD configurations where
underclocking the CPU has corrected this.
