If you are in Brisbane, Sydney, or Melbourne, look at Optus cable, up
to 1 MB/sec - for about $AU60/month (after you have bought the cable
modem).  It's a reasonable step up for modem users, because the unit
call fee (25c) for local calls tends to add up to about $AUD30/month,
and of course your telco line becomes always available for incoming
calls.
