So, I have been using joe since day-one of using Linux.

So, every version of Mandrake (not to mention every other distro) includes
joe.

So, I installed Mandrake 7.2 (the complete, 4-cd version). I actually bought
it to see what the new version's all about.

So, I do an installation with 'ALL', custom to use ReiserFS.

Upon rebooting, going back into a terminal window, and trying to edit the
hosts file, I type in 'joe hosts'.

I get a 'command not found'.

I do a locate for joe. I use the find function to find joe.

Joe's gone.

What the fuck? Why is it that everytime I'm about to re-think my position on
Mandrake, and actually am about ready to say to myself "Hey, this rocks!",
some idiot over at MandrakeSoft makes a decision to just leave out a totally
standard text editor - and not tell anyone???

Sure, undoubtedly the responses from MandrakeSoft will be the usual
arrogance infused "Well, why don't you just download joe and install it -
you know how to do it, obviously... hrumph!", but that's not the point (as I
will do just that).

The issue here is one of consistency, which seems to be overun by one of
politics/arrogance (maybe someone believes that all users should only use
emacs, or vi), one of poor oversight, or what have you.

Fact is, I was checking out 7.2, and I was severely impressed by it so far,
and I was about to write up a relatively lauding review of it, when I came
to a screeching halt because of this.

So, is there any sort of explanation for this? Will this be addressed in a
future revision? Will joe be added to MandrakeUpdate as an update after the
fact?

Why did this happen? Who made this decision?

I'd really like to know!

Harry
