Hi folks

I guess I'll have to comment this type of messages on the list
from time to time:

Happily enough, there is nothing wrong with the mailer. Those of you who
were with us several months ago (senior cookers, ha?) will probably
remember the time when our mailserver was unable to deliver messages.
For younger cookers, I can only say: it wasn't funny.

After some digging, I found out the reason for problems: bouncing emails.
That is, many of emails were either bogus, or on machines with badly
configured sendmail (or whatever they use). I did what I could to free up
our poor server: wrote a little script that catches the bounces and
unsubscribes the user.

Script is stupid and unfriendly, but since then our mailing lists work.
In this particular case, are some of the bounce messages (taken from
my logs):

IGNORING <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: host
smtpsrvr.btconnect.com[193.113.209.22] said: 554
Syntactically invalid address for from field 'Fran?ois Pons
    <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>'

DELETING <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: host
smtpsrvr.btconnect.com[193.113.209.21] said: 550
Recipient Not Authorised [recipient rejected due to no authorised
    destination groups]

Plenty of these in my logs: the "IGNORING" ones were ignored,
"DELETING" ones caused deletion of this subscriber.

Finally: my script is very simple, and I bet there are better ways to get
rid of bogus adresses, while keeping the good ones, but I have no time to
write it. If you have a better script, please help me to replace the
existing one with it, else all I can sey is "get a better setver".

FYI, some of the bigger providers often cause trouble too: hotmail for
instance. Don't use account on hotmail unless you want an auto-expiration
mailing list.

The mailserver is on strike. It wants better working conditions,
paid days off and a female connector. ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
