More information ! I have managed to get 160Mb on it, but with fewer files. I know when you run things like fsck the output says something like nnnn/zzzzzz files. I have always assumed that zzzzzz is the maximum number of files possible on the disk. Is there a finite limit of files that Linux (or indeed any OS) is able to put on a Zip drive ?
