That was it!  After doing `modprobe ns558` the kernel could see my Sidewinder.

However, it didn't like what it saw - `jstest --normal /dev/input/js0` 
produced screenfulls of:
        sidewinder.c : Too many bit errors on gameport0 - reinitializing joystick
forever.

LM7.2 produces messages similar to that for a while, then starts optimizing 
again.  I can use the joystick in LM7.2 but I'm beginning to despair about 
cooker.
